Abstract The presence of fringing in astronomical Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) images will have an impact on photometric quality and measurements. Yet its impact on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) has not been fully studied. We present a detailed study on fringing for CCDs already implemented on the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera’s focal plane. After making physical measurements and knowing the compositions, we developed a model for the e2v CCDs. We present a method to fit for the internal height variation of the epoxy layer within the sensors based on fringing measurements in a laboratory setting. This method is generic enough that it can be easily modified to work for other CCDs. Using the derived fringing model, we successfully reproduce comparable fringing amplitudes that match the observed levels in images taken by existing telescopes with different optical designs. This model is then used to forecast the expected level of fringing in a single LSSTy-band sky background exposure with Rubin telescope optics in the presence of a realistic time-varying sky spectrum. The predicted fringing amplitude in LSST images ranges from 0.04% to 0.2% depending on the location of a CCD on the focal plane. We find that the predicted variation in surface brightness caused by fringing in LSSTy-band sky background images is about 0.6 μ Jy arcsec 2 , which is 40 times larger than the current measurement error. We conclude that it is necessary to include fringing correction in the Rubin’s LSST image processing pipeline.

FAQs

What is the legacy survey of space and time? ›

An Interactive Motion Picture

From its mountaintop site, the LSST camera will image the entire visible sky every few nights, capturing changes over time from seconds to years. Ultimately, after 10 years of observation, the LSST camera will enable scientists to create a stunning time-lapse movie of the universe.

What did Vera Rubin discover in astronomy? ›

To their surprise, Rubin and Ford discovered that the outer stars in a spiral galaxy rotate as quickly as those at the center, which suggested that there had to be something else in the galaxy providing extra gravity.

What is the legacy survey? ›

The original Legacy Surveys (MzLS, DECaLS and BASS) conducted dedicated observations of ~14,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky visible from the northern hemisphere in three optical bands (g,r,z), which was augmented with four infrared bands from NEOWISE.

What is the time space theory? ›

General relativity is a physical theory about space and time and it has a beautiful mathematical description. According to general relativity, the spacetime is a 4-dimensional object that has to obey an equation, called the Einstein equation, which explains how the matter curves the spacetime.

What is the lasting legacy of the space race? ›

The Earth is now surrounded by a network of satellites, which provide broadband communications and high-definition television, data used for weather reporting and GPS navigation and positioning. Many of these tools and systems were created and developed during the space race.

What is the space-time travel theory? ›

Time travel in physics. Some theories, most notably special and general relativity, suggest that suitable geometries of spacetime or specific types of motion in space might allow time travel into the past and future if these geometries or motions were possible.

What is the purpose of space-time? ›

Spacetime diagrams are useful in visualizing and understanding relativistic effects, such as how different observers perceive where and when events occur.

What is the time and space theory of geography? ›

In geography one can find several theoretical models elaborated to understand time-space. These model consider the movements of contraction/shrinking, of convergence, of divergence, and finally of crumpling and shrivelling.
