Among the NFL’s 32 highest-paid safeties ahead of the 2024 season, no member of the Indianapolis Colts’ unit makes the list. The closest is Julian Blackmon at No. 36.
Blackmon was a free agent this past offseason and explored signing with other teams, however, he was unable to find a deal that matched what he was looking for. Instead, he returned to the Colts on a one-year deal that will pay him $3.7 million. He will again be a free agent in 2025.
Blackmon is coming off a career season in which he saw the majority of his snaps come playing closer to the line of scrimmage. Blackmon was very sound as a tackler and ranked top-five among safeties in PFF’s run-stop rate metric. In coverage, he had four interceptions, two pass breakups, and a passer rating of 57.5 when targeted.
“I think just consistency, man,”said Blackmonwhen asked what’s next for him. “Trying to even ultimately grow more as much as I can. You never got it, that’s what coach always says, and I agree with that. So for me the next thing is just understanding what else I can do. What more can I do and where can I put myself in better situations to make even more plays.”
In addition to the consistency that Blackmon is looking to build off of in 2024, staying healthy will also be an important part for him getting the pay day he’s looking for next March. In four seasons, Blackmon is yet to appear in every game.
The competition for the free safety role next to Blackmon will be one of the bigger training camp battles for the Colts this summer. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, it has been Rodney Thomas and Nick Cross sharing those starting reps. As defensive coordinator Gus Bradley noted earlier this offseason, it will be consistency that determines who is starting next to Blackmon.
Given the uncertainty at that position and now perhaps the need for added depth with Daniel Scott out for the season with an Achilles injury, if there’s a position that the Colts could add to before camp arrives, it is safety. Here is a look at the top remaining free-agent options.
With Thomas and Cross both still playing on rookie deals, they aren’t anywhere near being among the top-32 highest-paid players.
Here is a look at who the top-32 highest-paid safeties are this season by average annual value.
